Trace Audit

TRUST but Verify or trust but Ai-A-Fy

It took me far too long to make the connection of Trust but Verify.  I thought if you trust, verifying was not needed. I would not be in Tulum right now if I had verified someone I trusted.  I will continue to share things that catch my eye as being not quite right.  I trusted the top 35, I verified our value.

FlexJobs Top 35 Jobs and Salary Range

I took a look at what FlexJobs posted as the top 35 Jobs and the rate you should expect and some of them looked too low to me.  Below is the Trace forensic audit.  It shows what Trace Solutions does for all of us.

Flex top 35 Jobs for 2026

FlexJobs Data vs. Actual Strategic Market Value

 1. Accountant

FlexJobs Posted: $18–$34 per hour

Trace Analysis: UNDERVALUED. $18/hr. is effectively "Data Entry" with a math degree. In 2026, a freelance Accountant is a Risk Mitigator. If they are handling crypto-assets or DOGE-level compliance, the floor is $55/hr. Trusting the $18 rate means you're hiring someone to record history; verifying their worth means hiring someone to protect your future.

2. Animator

FlexJobs Posted: $18–$67 per hour

Trace Analysis: ACCURATE (with a catch). The $18 end is for "AI-Assisted Template" work. The $67+ end is for Original Vision. As AI floods the market with cheap motion, the "Human Eye" for storytelling becomes the premium. Don’t settle for the low end unless you want your brand to look like a generic bot.

3. Attorney

FlexJobs Posted: $22–$288 per hour

Trace Analysis: DANGEROUSLY BROAD. $$22/hr. for an attorney is an insult to the bar exam. Real freelance legal counsel for startups and "Sovereign Individuals" in 2026 is billing $350+/hr. If you see a $22 "Attorney," verify they aren't just a basic LLM wrapper with a human rubber stamp.

4. Business Consultant

FlexJobs Posted: $21–$179 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE EFFICIENCY GAP.A consultant at $21/hr. is just a "Project Helper." A Trace-Level Consultant who performs Efficiency Audits ((finding waste and automating the "Master Blocks") is worth $250/hr. Because they pay for themselves within the first 30 days.

5. Content Creator

FlexJobs Posted: $17–$41 per hour

Trace Analysis: COMMODITY TRAP. Flex is pricing "Quantity." Trace values "Influence."A creator who builds trust for a brand (like the Founders Journal) is a Strategic Architect. They should be commanding $80–$150/hr. $17/hr. is for people screaming into the void.

6. Content Strategist

FlexJobs Posted: $17–$73 per hour

Trace Analysis: REASONABLE. The high end ($73) is where the money sits. These people are the "Brain" behind the "Voice." If you're paying less than $50, you aren't getting strategy; you're getting a calendar.

7. Copywriter

FlexJobs Posted: $17–$51 per hour

Trace Analysis: EXTINCT VS. EVOLVED. Basic copy at $17/hr. is being replaced by AI. To be "Authentic" and "In Your Face," a copywriter must be a Conversion Specialist. In 2026, their worth is $100+/hr. because they generate revenue, they don't just fill space.

8. Cybersecurity Developer

FlexJobs Posted: $22–$67 per hour

Trace Analysis: CRITICALLY LOW. In 2026, cybersecurity is a "Life or Death" business asset. A freelance security dev at $22/hr. is a liability. You verify your security by hiring at the $90–$200/hr. level. Anything less is just "Security Theater."

9. Data Analyst

FlexJobs Posted: $18–$39 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE "SO WHAT?" FACTOR. Flex is paying for someone to move numbers around. Trace pays for the person who can answer: "What does this mean for the CEO?" That person is worth $75/hr.

10. Data Scientist

FlexJobs Posted: $22–$71 per hour

Trace Analysis: SHOCKINGLY LOW. This is the core of 2026 tech. A freelance Data Scientist building predictive models starts at $130/hr. If they accept $22, they are likely still in school or using outdated methods.

11. Editor FlexJobs Posted: $15–$50 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE QUALITY PREMIUM. As AI floods the web with "good enough" content, the Human Editor has become a luxury. In 2026, an Editor isn't just checking grammar; they are protecting your Brand Voice from sounding like a machine. Top-tier editors for specialized journals command $75–$100/hr.

12. Executive Assistant FlexJobs Posted: $$18–$38 per hour

Trace Analysis: ROLE EVOLUTION. $18/hr. buys you a "Task-Doer." A Trace-Level Executive Assistant is actually a Fractional Chief of Staff who manages your AI agents and your schedule. Their worth in 2026 is $60–$90/hr. because they buy back your time, which is your most expensive asset.

13. Financial Analyst FlexJobs Posted: $19–$39 per hour

Trace Analysis: CONSERVATIVE. $19/hr. is for data entry. Real freelance analysts providing Strategic Forecasts for CEOs are currently averaging $85–$120/hr. If you trust your company's fiscal future to a $19/hr. rate, you are under-investing in your own survival.

14. HR. Generalist FlexJobs Posted: $19–$32 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE COMPLIANCE TRAP. This rate covers basic paperwork. In a world of Job Decay, you need an HR. expert who understands Human Sovereignty. Vetted HR. consultants who can fix toxic cultures and manage 50Plus Tribe transitions are worth $75/hr.

15. Interior Designer FlexJobs Posted: $17–$39 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE EXPERIENCE GAP. High-end freelance designers—especially those integrating "Wellness Tech" or sustainable workspaces for 2026—are seeing $100–$200/hr. $17/hr. is for someone picking out paint colors; it’s not for someone designing a high-performance environment.

16. IT Support Specialist FlexJobs Posted: $17–$32 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE UTILITY RATE. This is accurate for basic troubleshooting. However, the IT Architect who ensures your company’s hardware isn’t vulnerable to AI-hacks is a different tier altogether. They bill at $100+/hr.

17. Machine Learning Engineer FlexJobs Posted: $22–$69 per hour

Trace Analysis: ABSURDLY LOW. This is the "Gold Rush" job of 2026. A freelance ML Engineer for less than $150/hr.is likely an intern. Real specialists who build the "Master Blocks" for corporations are billing $250–$500/hr. $22/hr. is a typo in the face of reality.

18. Marketing Manager FlexJobs Posted: $16–$42/hr.

Trace Analysis: THE FRACTIONAL MOVEMENT. $16/hr. is for posting on social media. A Fractional Marketing Director who oversees strategy and ROI for a Founder is worth $125–$175/hr. You don't want a "Manager" at $16; you want a Growth Partner.

19. Media Buyer FlexJobs Posted: $19–$35 per hour

Trace Analysis: PERFORMANCE DRIVEN. $35/hr. is a "Junior" rate. In 2026, top Media Buyers (managing Meta, TikTok, or AI-Ad networks) usually work on a percentage of ad spend or a minimum of $100/hr. They control your "megaphone"—don't let a budget-rate buyer handle it.

20. Mobile Developer FlexJobs Posted: $14–$72 per hour

Trace Analysis: WIDE VARIANCE. $14/hr. is the offshore "race to the bottom" rate. To get a developer who understands Native AI integration and user security, you’re looking at $100–$150/hr.

21. Photographer FlexJobs Posted: $15–$100 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE ARTISTRY PREMIUM. With AI generating images for pennies, the $15/hr. photographer is extinct. The $100+/hr. photographer is an Aesthetic Strategist who captures the "Grit and Humanity" that AI can't fake.

22. Producer FlexJobs Posted: $16–$61 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE OPERATIONAL BACKBONE. A producer at $16/hr. is a coordinator. A Trace Producer who handles the complexity of 2026 multi-media builds is worth $85–$120/hr. They are the glue that keeps the vision from falling apart.

23. Programmer FlexJobs Posted: $19–$61 per hour

Trace Analysis: COMMODITIZED. Basic "Coding" is being eaten by AI. The people making money in 2026 aren't just "Programmers"; they are Solution Architects who know howto use AI to build systems. They start at $125/hr.

24. Project Manager FlexJobs Posted: $19–$55 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE STEERING WHEEL. $19/hr. gets you a spreadsheet updater. $75–$100/hr. gets you a Leader who can navigate a team through a crisis. In a "Triage" situation, you want the latter.

25. Psychiatrist FlexJobs Posted: $83–$275 per hour

Trace Analysis: ACCURATE & VITAL. This reflects the growing mental health crisis in the wake of rapid technological shift. It is one of the few roles where "Human Presence" is non-negotiable, and the market respects the rate.

26. Public Relations Manager FlexJobs Posted: $16–$66 per hour

Trace Analysis: IDENTITY PROTECTION. In the era of deepfakes, PR is no longer about "press releases"; it's about Reputation Defense. Specialists in this field in 2026 are billing $150–$250/hr. $16/hr. is for writing captions; $150/hr. is for saving your name.

27. Recruiter FlexJobs Posted: $17–$35 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE GATEKEEPER. As discussed, AI-Recruiting is failing the 50Plus Tribe. A Trace-Level Headhunter who finds "Sovereign Talent" through human networking is worth far more than $35/hr.; they usually take 20-30% of the first-year salary because they find the "Un-findable."

28. Security Analyst FlexJobs Posted: $18–$49 per hour

Trace Analysis: DANGEROUS UNDERESTIMATE. $18/hr. for security? You might as well leave the front door open. Professional Security Analysts in 2026 are Digital Bodyguards. Expect to pay $120–$200/hr. to actually be safe.

29. SEO Specialist FlexJobs Posted: $16–$32 per hour

Trace Analysis: OBSOLETE THINKING. Traditional SEO is dying. You need AIO (AI Optimization)—making sure AI models like Gemini and ChatGPT recommend you. This is a specialized 2026 skill worth $150/hr.

30. Software Developer FlexJobs Posted: $19–$62 per hour

Trace Analysis: MID-TIER. Similar to programmers, the "commodity" dev is struggling. The SME Developer who integrates proprietary data into private AI models is the 2026 standard at $135/hr.

31. Software Engineer FlexJobs Posted: $23–$72 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE SYSTEMS BRAIN. Accurate for mid-level work, but for Infrastructure Integrity, the rate jumps to $150–$250/hr.

32. Technical Writer FlexJobs Posted: $20–$48 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE TRANSLATOR. As AI makes things more complex, the person who can explain it clearly is worth their weight in gold. Legacy-Speak to Modern-Tech translators are commanding $85–$110/hr.

33. UX Designer FlexJobs Posted: $21–$66 per hour

Trace Analysis: STABLE. User Experience is still king. In 2026, designers who focus on "Human-Centric AI interfaces" (making tech feel less like a bot) are at the high end ($100+).

34. Video Editor FlexJobs Posted: $15–$80 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE ATTENTION ECONOMY. Short-form video is the #1 tool for 2026. A $15 editor gives you a template. An $80 editor gives you a Viral Strategy. Worth every penny to get the high end.

35. Web Developer FlexJobs Posted: $16–$49 per hour

Trace Analysis: THE FRONT DOOR. $16/hr. gets you a Wix site. $125/hr. gets you a high-converting, secure, AI-integrated Sovereign Platform. Verify your developer before you trust them with your online "Pentimento."

 Fellow Job Seekers

I see you. I know that the modern job search is "unpaid shadow labor" that feels like an endless car engine idling at top speed. It is exhausting looking for work each day.  So much so, that in the past I have been willing to take a very low paying job vs my value, just to get off the resume game and ghosting and never even being seen as a human with value to give.  This time I decided to create a company and put all my time into it instead of a losing hand.  We are burning our fuel just to stay in place. When PayScale says "Smarter Compensation," they are betting on our exhaustion. They are betting that we’ll take $20/hr. placement because we are too tired to keep fighting for the $100/hr. we are actually worth.

Trace is the Pivot. We don't want you to "settle" for the sake of your sanity. We want to Vette your Value, so the sanity comes naturally through respect and proper compensation. Don't let a "Bot-to-Bot" world turn your Pentimento—your layers of grit and history—into a discount.

What this audit means

Why PayScale is Failing the C-Suite

The "Competitive Advantage" Myth PayScale tells CEOs that low-balling compensation based on "industry averages" is a smart move. In 2026, this is a Fatal Error. If you pay the "average" rate for an Accountant, Attorney, or Developer, you are hiring the people that AI hasn't replaced yet—the "Shallow Versions" of the workforce. You aren't gaining an advantage; you are buying a seat on a sinking ship.

The Trace Advantage at Trace, we don't look at "averages." We look at Impact.

  • PayScale sees a line item.
  • Trace sees a Sovereign SME who prevents a $2M mistake.

When you "Verify Before You Trust," you realize that paying $150/hr. for Sage Wisdom is infinitely cheaper than paying $35/hr. for a "Job Decay" generalist who doesn't see the tremble before that quake hits the company hard.  It feels great to be valued and even greater to share knowledge earned by doing.  Not prompting.  Still love AI.  But don't mess with my worth.

The Forensic Five: Strategic Audit 2026

The Forensic Five: Strategic Audit 2026

1. THE "SAFETY ESCAPE" GIANT: The Boeing Company (BA)

  • Company Age: 109 years.
  • The Conflict: Old-world engineering vs. New-world financial pressure.
  • Data Source: FAA Audit Reports (2024-2025) & Glassdoor Engineering Sentiment 2026.
  • The Pain Points:  "Traveler Work": Parts moving down the line without being finished.
    • The "Grey Gap":  Massive retirement of "777-era" inspectors, replaced by junior       staff who haven't seen a "Quality Escape" before it happens.
    • Employee Turnover: High inmid-level quality assurance due to stress and federal oversight.
  • Predictive Future: By late 2026, another "Grounding Event" is likely unless Institutional Memory is re-inserted into the factory floor.
  • Trace SME Intervention: Retired Lead Inspectors to mentor floor managers on "Zero-Defect Logic."

2. THE "COMPLIANCE GHOST" GIANT: Wells Fargo (WFC)

  • Company Age: 174 years.
  • The Conflict: Legacy Banking vs. AI-First Cost Cutting.
  • Data Source: CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) Complaint Database 2025.
  • The Pain Points:
    • Identity Friction: Automated systems locking out "Sovereign" (Global/Expat) clients.
    • Manager Burnout: Middle managers are drowning in AI-generated compliance reports that lack human nuance.
    • Old vs. New: Legacy mainframe core systems being "wrapped" in AI layers that the current staff doesn't fully understand.
  • Predictive Future: Regulatory fines for "Algorithmic Bias" and customer churn to boutique "human-centric" banks.
  • Trace SME Intervention: Legacy Compliance Officers who understand the spirit of the law, not just the code.

3. THE "YIELD STAGNATION" GIANT: Intel Corporation (INTC)

  • Company Age: 58 years.
  • The Conflict: Reclaiming the "Manufacturing Crown" (18A Node) vs. Massive Talent Brain Drain.
  • Data Source: Q3 2025 Earnings Call & Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) Talent Reports.
  • The Pain Points:
    • Knowledge Hemorrhage: 15% workforce reduction in 2024-2025 took the "Sage" knowledge of fab operations with it.
    • Yield Gaps: New factories (Fabs) are underperforming because the "Grit" of silicon manufacturing isn't in the AI—it's in the experience.
  • Predictive Future: Missing "18A" production deadlines, leading to a permanent loss of      market share to TSMC.
  • Trace SME Intervention: Fab Sages retired technicians who can debug physical hardware failures that sensors miss.

4. THE "INFRASTRUCTURE DECAY" GIANT: Union Pacific (UNP)

  • Company Age: 164 years.
  • The Conflict: Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) vs. Physical Safety.
  • Data Source: Surface Transportation Board (STB) 2025 Service Reports.
  • The Pain Points:
    • Institutional Memory Loss: Train conductors and maintenance crews with 30 years of experience are being replaced by automated sensors that fail in extreme weather.
    • Manager Burnout: High turnover in dispatch due to "Algorithm Drudgery"—bots making scheduling decisions that create physical bottlenecks.
  • Predictive Future: Increase in derailments and federal intervention as the "Physical Logic" of the rails is lost to the digital office.
  • Trace SME Intervention: Master Dispatchers and Field Engineers to restore "Physical Logic" to automated schedules.

5. THE "LEGACY LOCK" GIANT: International Business Machines (IBM)

  • Company Age: 115 years.
  • The Conflict: Hybrid Cloud/AI (Watsonx) vs. Supporting the World's Legacy Mainframes.
  • Data Source: 2025 IDC Enterprise Infrastructure Report.
  • The Pain Points:
    • The COBOL Crisis: The world’s banking and airline systems still run on IBM Mainframes. The people who know how to maintain them are 70+ years old.
    • New Systems Friction: The AI developers don't understand the legacy "Metal" they are building on.
  • Predictive Future: A "Global System Outage" triggered by a failed integration between modern AI and legacy mainframe logic.
  • Trace SME Intervention: "Bridge Engineers” SMEs who speak both 1980s Mainframe and 2026 AI.
